RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
